Baby Swimming

All babies have a natural affinity with water; it’s a very liberating environment for them. Baby swimming classes can help develop this affinity into true love for the water!

Utilising the early “gag” reflex (reflex action which prevents water entering baby’s lungs by shutting off the epiglottis when submerged,) submersion swims help to develop a baby’s cardio-vascular system whilst they experience an unrivalled sense of freedom for their age! When all a baby’s time is usually spent on their back, or in a car seat, to have the freedom of independent movement as well as a varied environment stimulates baby whilst encouraging good sleeping patterns. The resistance of the water helps to strengthen their muscles – which in turn can further their development e.g. their head, neck and back muscles are strengthened which means they could be sitting/standing sooner.

Baby swimming lessons take the earliest of movements in the water and encourage them verbally (e.g. “kick kick”.) This helps to develop their language and comprehension skills. Learning to swim in this way prevents the child experiencing the usual anxiety created when learning to swim at an older age. Parents, who are themselves scarred of the water, often bring their baby swimming so they can have enjoyable early experiences with water, and in some cases a class can also help to alleviate some of their own anxieties.

Early baby swimming lessons also promotes poolside respect from the child as they grow, so parents feel comfortable that they have control of their child in the pool area. This makes family swim time less stressful especially as the family grows.
