Sun Protection Advice
Enjoying the sunshine is great in the summer and on holiday, but it can also be dangerous.

Over exposure to the sun, especially for children, can increase the risk of cancer in later life. It is therefore critical that precautions are taken to avoid sun burn and long term irreparable skin damage. Even on an overcast day it is estimated that 80-85% of the sun's rays pass through clouds. Sitting in the shade isn't always the answer however as reflected light from sand, water or even concrete can cause skin damage. Ordinary clothing does not always provide the protection you may think as this can vary with the weave, colour, wetness or dryness of the fabric.

Babies should be kept out of the sun as much as possible. When swimming or out and about, make sure they are covered up with Light Clothing, Sun Cream, a Hat and Sunglasses (if they will keep them on!)

For toddlers who may be playing out and about for most of the day, the key is to cover up. Try to avoid he sun between lunchtime hours when the UV rays are strongest, especially at midday.

Sun Protection is just as important for your eyes too. Wearing Sunglasses which block out at least 95% of the UV rays are recommended to avoid long and short term damage.

How to keep them safe:
• Cover up in the sun. Consider purchasing clothing with a recognized ultraviolet protection factor. Splish Splash Splosh offer a wide variety of Protective Clothing all with ratings of UPF 50+
• Wear a Wide Brim or Legionnaire Style Hat to protect head, neck, face and shoulders which are particularly vulnerable areas. Caps or Bucket Hats are great too – check our range for a full array of colours, designs and styles
• Wear Sunglasses with an Eye Protective Factor of 95% or above. Babybanz and Kidzbanz are perfect for those who like taking sunglasses off – with a fully adjustable strap they not only do the job but they look great too!
• Apply Sun Cream suitable for your skin type to all exposed areas, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. If your child is swimming make sure it is waterproof and do always remember to re-apply if your toddler is out all day! Splish Splash Splosh recommends an Organic Sun Screen, ideal for use by those who just love running in and out of the water!
